I'm very impressed how much cutting you did freehand and still got it so accurate. It looks very confusing to me. I would probably cut out the wrong parts. Do you mark it so you know which little triangle to cut and which to leave, or are you just that good?

I doubt it's the out-of-true-ness of the V-belt that's the problem. And that sort of material is not so good for milling. I think I might try using a flat belt next time. But I wanted this machine to be easy to build using commonly available materials, and with the motor rigidly mounted, V-belt vibration hasn't been a problem.

Matthias, have you ever thought of making a jig device that trues up v-belts? I'm guessing might, I certainly have. ...to stop the vibration that makes one think it's some out-of-true metal part. (One advantage of Poly-V) Haven't made one yet though. I've got in mind making a jig to attach to the 1950 Shopsmith, using the 3" x 2 1/4" dia. sanding drum as the cutter to remove the excess. I have never returned a belt for being out-of-true, but perhaps I need to start.

All the wheels can be made just by cutting off the corners with straight cuts. Then use grinding or sanding or planing tools to finish round. Or lathe turn on partially completed saw. Temporary wood pulley can be made by gluing smaller disk between 2 larger disks to make v belt groove. Curves can also be sawn by hand with keyhole saw, or jig saw blade in handle, or metal hacksaw with blade turned sideways. Use the tools you have. Use your imagination. :-)

You also need a jigsaw, or something that can cut curves to make the wheels. But yes, if you don't have a bandsaw, the best way to make the trunions is to rig up a temporary table. I actually cover that in the plans :)

@TheFishingschool I haven't bought the plans, but the core components seem to require only a table saw and a drill press (maybe even just a circular saw and hand drill if you are good). If you replace the trunions with a temporary fixed mount you could probably use the saw itself to create the trunions and all of the covers. Hopefully @Matthiaswandel will comment on the feasibility of that. If so I might just buy the plans rather than work it out on my own.

@Izrun Depends where you live. Any wood that is strong, stiff, and stable - or resistant to warping. Most any wood used for framing houses. Douglas Fir, Southern Yellow Pine, "Whitewood." Many of the hardwoods are good, such as White Oak, Hard Maple, Cherry, Walnut. Also, many tropical woods, if you have them.

Not bad, only improvement I can think of is to glue up a blank out of strips of wood with the grain in alternating directions; this will limit the amount of warpage and twish the blade can get in it once it gets wet.

@Zothaqqua Short answer: All wood expands and contracts with humidity, and this expansion is greatest across the grain, and virtually nil the long way. So the tabletop would tend to get "wider" while the skirt across the end didn't. So the joint needs to be able to move a little or the table could bow or split.

Seasoning freshly milled green timber does in fact take a couple of years for that thickness of cut. Why would that surprise anybody ? I see on your website you are storing it on the side of the house where the sun shines most. I hope you aren't letting the sun shine directly onto the timber, it will check and split if you do.

I figure the lower TPI would help in that there'd be fewer teeth producing wood chips, but more space between the teeth to help clear it out. My blade is 4 TPI. I'd love to see your bandsaw!

@Matthiaswandel Not sure what you mean by resaw blade. I've used 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch wide, 3 and 4 tpi, hook tooth blades for resawing seasoned hardwood up to 12 inches on my 18 inch saw (3000 blade feet per min.) Even with a fresh blade it seems slow-going., slow being a relative term. I find that blades I've resharpened myself seem to work better. I too, have a wood-framed, shop-built saw, but I used metal wheels.

@Danny77uk One should definitely NOT wear gloves when operating woodworking machinery - every owner's manual and safety manual I've ever read advises against it. Eye protection is a different matter, but safety glasses with sideshields should be enough for a bandsaw. I've had saw bands break before and they don't really do much of anything except stop cutting...and pop very loudly :-). Very large, highly tensioned, mill bandsaws might be a different matter, of course.

@Matthiaswandel For such a small amount of wood you might try standing the boards on end in a large plastic trash can with a cover, placed in the sun. Remove the condensation from the lid each morning and evening. After a month or two you can bring them inside to finish drying, but the time will have been greatly shortened. I've had great success doing lathe turning blanks this way.

@ignas2526 Green wood contains alot of moisture and shrinks as it dries. It must be dried gradually so as to prevent the outside from shrinking much before the inside has dried. Else you get cracks and inner tensions set up in the wood. The process can be speeded up in a temperature and humidity controlled environment such as a kiln, but air dying takes longer.

I'm not sure if it would work for you, but I found hanging power cables down from the roof keeps me from tripping or damaging them, and I can plug in when I want and otherwise leave the socket dangling free - I switch the cables off at the wall so I know there's no power in dangling cables unless I want it.

Lead solder hasn't been used in plumbing for about 30 years now, it's not the same stuff used for soldering electronics. Nearly all copper pipes are soldered so I don't know why people think it's an odd thing to be doing, all the pipework in your house probably is soldered.

The way your floor joist was notched to accomodate the hot water line greatly compromises the strength of the joist in comparison to having a hole bored through the center of it. It wouldn't really much matter when the wall you took out was in place, as the load would transfer to it... But now that it is gone, I would reinforce the notched area before putting up your ceiling. You may know more about it than I do and already considered this, but I thought I'd write just in case you hadn't..

I must have missed the video of how to build the cylinder/piston configuration and how you made the toggle to switch the valve between strokes unless it doesnt have the toggle. Did you know that the old steam train engines were actually very small twin engines and sat one on either side the front most wheels? I notice the holes in your disk are in line and straight away from the driving point. Is this something you did to achieve balance due to there being effectively more mass on that side due to the driving rod. Adding a vacuum only approximately increases your air pressure by 14 pounds. How much air pressure do you think your engine could take before it failed.

Awesome competition. hopefully more will video respond with their results. Next you should try to use stronger lighter wood for the internals. Would gearing it up be cheating? such as a 1 to 2 ratio? then you can make a really strong motor and put more psi behind it.

correct me if i'm wrong, but it looks like you missed a trick here. when you've got one hose sucking and one blowing (your final attempt in this video); as you take one of the pipes off (after letting it run for a while) it looks like the engine speeds up massively for about one second. this could be the engine synching with the frames per second value of the camera, but to all intents and purposes it does look like it speeds up. check it out.

Matthias, you have done a wonderful job on this band saw. It is amazingly stable and performs smoothly. The smooth cut, however, is due to the quality of the blade you use. I wonder why you made the back-side of your fence so thin. it would be safer to take the band saw off the dolly for stability when sawing. You did a great job of showing good band saw safety. Your right, If only it had accrued to me I believe it would have been a cool video too. I made sure that all the old weathered parts of the table showed so as to make it look as rustic as possible and I left as much of the edges of it as irregular as I could too for the ole pastoral look and to make it look as pioneer made as I could. It came out very sturdy and strong and sits very level. My friend I made it for gets compliments all the time. Maybe next time I can get a picture of it to share.

I just finished making a rustic table for a friend of mine and I used some beautiful old red oak wood from his firewood pile in his back yard to do it. I did it all, old school too and used no modern metal fasteners or glue. I did all the wood cuts and everything with all hand tools too. Maybe I should have made a video of it for YouTube too. Matias, I have an old band saw, the motor is weak....but I was thinking If I buy a circular saw and replace my old band saw with the circular saw motor..how it is going to do it Becuase the original motor is 1/5 hp 1750 rpm and a regular circular saw is around 1hp and 5000 rpms.... Good job. Bandsaws get expensive in a hurry as the wheel size increases. A tilting table would have been nice but hey! I like they way you segmented the wheel rims. Surprised you didn't finger joint the segments together.

@Matthiaswandel Depending on the ratios of the pullies, either or should be fine. I'd go with 1/2HP since they're pretty easy to find and run at the proper voltage for home use. You need to be careful around some appliance motors because they aren't always fully enclosed to protect against electric shock or injury from moving parts.

Showing how flat belts stay centered on crowned pulleys. Before V-belts were invented, flat bets were used to transmit power to all kinds of machinery. Flat belts can run faster, and offer higher efficiency than V-belts commonly used. But they need more tension, and need to be set up more precisely to successfully track.

chrisbawah, What you described is called a Poly-V belt. After many decades of single v type belts, the Poly-V appears to be a return to the flat belt with advantages of a V belt. A side note in the world of woodworking, I have a Craftsman contractors cast iron top table saw that originally ran a single V belt. @MufinMcFlufin - unlike the belt shown in the example, which is flat on both sides, a v-belt has ridges running along the length of the inside of the belt. These ridges fit into valleys cut into the pulley face to stop the belt slipping off sideways. If you can have a look under the bonnet of a car, in all likelihood the belt driving the fan in front of the engine will be a v-belt.

This can't be any better of a technique than using a traditional iron. At least be careful not to keep the heat gun in the same location for too long, or you will severely damage the layering of the board.

That's pretty clever! I have a little machine I got from Harbor Freight that sharpens my chainsaw blade that is about the same. If you had a bunch of blades, I bet you could mount the Dremel in something to make sure you get an even grind on each tooth. I'm going to try this on my bandsaw blade...I've found a few nails with mine!

Actually, this is how re-sharpening is done in wood cutting factories. Only thing is they have automatic machines which use the teeth to move the blades the opposite direction as shown. The grinder tilts periodically on the teeth and job is done.

nice job. seems like your software could also be used as an "unknown pitch spur gear identifier" with just one or two more function-tweaks added. also would be SUPER if it could generate known pitch and pressure angle spur gear teeth (modular, metric, or both, better yet), then, a tightwad like me could, using a pantograph, make his OWN gear pitch identification leaves (which cost 3 or 4 times the program cost alone). but, just as it stands NOW, all in all *very* impressive :-)

someone told me it was 5, but the lowest ive seen is in clocks, where a 10 meshes with a 30, the 30 is attached to a 6, and the 6 meshes with a 24 to get a 1 to 3 ratio and then a 1 to 4 to get a total of 1 to 12 (hour hand to minute hand). ive seen this in numerous clocks. i like five because its an easy number to make ratios with.

It depends on a lot of factors. With pinwheel gearing, you can get a way with 3. Smooth running involute gears its more like 6 or 7, but real machines never go below 14. Though helical gears in power tools also often go below 14
